As Len Lye has been something of a patron saint to 7 Inch Cinema since we first started out, this event has us vibrating like nobody's business. And vibrations were definitely Len Lye's business, an artist who started out wanting to make his Samoan-inspired doodles move and ended up sending an electric shock through both the film and art worlds. It is probably his 1930s experiments at the GPO Film Unit for which he is best known, symphonies of colour scratched and stencilled straight onto clear leader, but there was a hell of a lot more to Lye and the aim of Individual Happiness Now is to explore the full spectrum of his extraordinary life and work. Land art. Tribal batiks. Book illustration. Kinetic sculpture. Wartime propaganda. Immersive multi-media. And a new philosophy for humankind, which he dubbed 'Individual Happiness Now'.
The evening will include 16mm screenings of classics and rarities, Lye's first film Tusalava with a new score composed and performed live by acclaimed jazz pianist Alcyona Mick, and we are also delighted to welcome Tyler Cann, Curator of the Len Lye Collection at the Govett-Brewster Gallery in New Zealand.
This event is presented in association with Ikon Gallery. The live score was co-commissioned by 7inch, Ikon Gallery and the British Film Institute.
